Venue: Krash, Ponce de León Ave., Santurce
Date: Every Thursday starting Nov. 5

The fifth installment of Puerto Rico's top drag-queen event began with a bang tonight at Krash nightclub. Nine aspiring queens took hold of the stage in a free themed presentation of their diverse talents. Dance, lip-synch and comedy were the formula ingredients that defined the evening.

Hosted, as always, by the wickedly delicious Jamie Sunflower in a Marilyn Monroe-esque attire; Road to Diva 2010 brought to a full house the newest batch of talented transvestites that will, for the next Thursdays, compete for the title crown. The show kick started with last year's winner, Queen Bee Ho, alongside some of the contestants in a pulse quickening hip-hop presentation.

The debut night quickly turned into a high-spirited juggernaut into which the contestants were evaluated by a panel of Puerto Rico's queer scene's celebrity judges and the no-nonsense diverse opinions of the crowd. Although some of them were the crowd's favorites, proved by their following; some fought and partially won against the odds risen upon them.

This year's motley crew is composed by: Sachel Shante, Naara Necole, Kenya Lee Michael, Lady Anne Monroe, LaToya Fruitpunch, April Carrión, Paoly Wonderbilt, Cyndy Ross, and Amanda D' Pausik. Although technical problems arose with some of the contestant's music selection, with scratched and unreadable CDs, that held back the fluidity of the event; the almost queens made the best of it. Two of the most memorable cases were the crowd favorites' Kenya Lee Michael's use of her DJ mock-up to play along scratching the turntables in turn with the skipping music while never missing a lip-synched note; and April Carrión's last minute change of song into a barely practiced, yet amazingly accomplished number. Also noteworthy was LaToya Fruitpunch's reggaetón mix pastiche-comedy performance.

At the end of the night, the top votes went to Kenya Lee Michael followed closely by LaToya Fruitpunch. The rest of the soon to be divas ran in close, diminished by subtle mistakes in lip-synching, make-up and clothing. Even those, whose first time on the stage provided some amateur errors, brought to the mix the hope of possibilities.

Next Thursday, November 12th, the contestants will participate in groups of three dedicated to the '70s, '80s, and '90s decades. Those present can hardly wait to see how this develops, since this installment of Road to Diva promises to be a nail-biting experience.
