“It’s been agreed the whole world stinks, so no one is taking showers anymore.”
Modest Mouse,
Paper Thin Walls

Modest Mouse, responsible for the 2004’s Grammy nominated for Best Alternative Rock Album platinum hit Good News for the People who Love Bad News, makes a refreshing comeback this year. The release on August 4 of their EP, No One's First, And You’re Next, compiles polished B-sides from previous records such as Good News for the People who Love Bad News and We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank.
On May 26, the early release of the 7” single Satellite Skin hit the stands providing a sample taste of the rehashed feast to come. The allegorical lyrics on this song touch delicate topics such as religion, where it embarks on a cynical rant toward people who act out a persona in order to belong somewhere. "No, we're not praying. We're kneeling hard enough, just say you believe them". The fear of death makes them ignore or recreate a fairy tale of what’s after we die. The soliloquy develops in a bluesy folk vocalization, reminiscing of Bright Eyes, morbidly taut in its irony.
Another song to highlight is King Rat, whose official video releases on August 4 through Myspace Music. The song previously appeared as the title track of their fifth promotional release, following 2005's The World at Large. The incomplete video has been anticipated for years, since the deceased Heath Ledger directed it. The film group THE MASSES, with whom Ledger was associated, completed the production on his honor; with the support of Modest Mouse’s lead singer and lyricist Isaac Brock. The song is based on a 1962 novel with the same title by James Clavell. The animated video portrays Ledger's heartfelt stance against the illegal commercial whale hunts that frequently take place off the coast of Australia.
The band’s steady pace on albums’ releases provides a progressive portfolio that amazes long term fans and hooks new listeners. Modest Mouse makes good use of the old to make the new EP, bridging a gap between what is expected from them and the incognita of their musical evolution. The alternative band brings the original mix to this production to satisfy the fans that have eagerly waited for Modest Mouse’s return, molding the record into a homecoming of sorts.
