The release of Regina Spektor’s fifth studio album, Far, made its debut on June 22 in Europe, and on June 23 in United States. By May 8, Spektor released her single Laughing With on her Myspace page and on May 18 released Laughing With along with Blue Lips for digital downloads.
Far takes us to another plane on Regina’s mind, on a trip where everything comes attached to a beautiful metaphor of life and love, surrounded by perky rhythms. Regina’s use of ragtime blues on her piano is the way she states her style over her wonderful lyricism. She is a firm believer of the right to love freely, and not only does she prove it through her lyrics, but also through her actions and associations.
In the crusade held by Courage Campaign against Proposition 8, they asked gay couples who were married legally before the Prop 8's phase to compile a video of photos in which gay couples held signs saying “Don’t make us get divorced” and also featuring people who are proud supporters of gay rights. The coalition asked for her permission to use one of her songs for the announcement. The video was heartwarming and perfectly mixed the still images with the song Fidelity from her fourth album Begin to Hope. Regina was excited to give all of her support to the campaign for gay civil rights. She also shared the stage with Cyndi Lauper on the civil rights’ awareness True Colors Tour
Each song has its unique story, all stemming from Regina’s imagination. The first track called The Calculation brings us a story of a true love formula in which she counts down feelings dividing them to get the essential answer. The song plays with a giggly beatbox-style that suits her voice perfectly. The other track that stands out was Blue Lips in which she gives a powerful metaphor with the underlying message being how someone moves so far away to discover that they are stuck in the same place. The lyrics show how her creative imagination recreates every detail on the story sprouting them from Bible narratives. Dance Anthem of the 80s should be scrutinized with enjoyment due to the catchy funky lyrics and the fun way she vocalizes them. Regina Spektor will start a tour on June 26 all over Europe gracing people with her perky masterpiece.
